Page Five: Crazy is as Crazy Does
The day of the hearing arrives, I take the morning off work to attend. The hearing is broken into two parts. The first is a hearing to determine if the house at 1600 Woolsey is a boarding house or a communal living space. The second part of the hearing is an agenda of complaints by the crazy lady. Luckily, the issue concerning my dogs was her number one complaint, it comes up first.
Remember from our earlier post, Barbara Tengeri had complained, that:
On 3/8/08, the same dog who bite me on my left calf and left black/blue teeth marks attacked my three year old visiting grandson. My grandson yelled to the top of his lungs. The dog was roaming loose around and throughout the house. He [sic] was left free to travel up and down the stairs, etc. I telephoned police only to be told the incident was not a crime. That I am to report it to the landlord. The landlord will be informed with this notification and at the hearing.
Her complaint boils down to her claim that Smokey had attacked her 3 year old grandson and had, she claims, bitten her two years earlier. When the issue came up for discussion, I took the floor. I opened with the fact that Smokey did not attack her grandson, Tengeri admitted that Smokey had darted right past him, never even touching him. The hearing officer stated that that could hardly be called an attack, and all present chuckled over it. Having set that non-sense aside, I next addressed Tengeri’s claim that Smokey had bitten her two years previous with the startling fact that Smokey was barely a year old. A year old puppy could not possibly have bitten her two years previously. Once again everyone chuckled and Tengeri made no reply. She accepted it as if it were fact. Certainly she could not argue the point, she had to accept that she had been caught in a lie. Shortly later I excused myself from the hearing and went to work. I figured that would be the end of it, but I was seriously under-estimating the power of crazy. You see, when you are burning with madness the way that Barbara Tengeri is, facts cease to matter, logic ceases to matter, all that remains is your madness. I was not aware of how deep the sickness ran, I thought that would be the end of it, she admitted that she had made both instances up in public in front of 10 witnesses, surely that was the end.
I left the meeting angry. How could someone make up such a libelous story, call the police and report it as fact, then when confronted, admit it was a lie, and people chuckle? I was not able to see the humor. While I had left the meeting early, the outcome was that the hearing officer decided that the house was a communal living situation and Tengeri agreed not to call the police on any house member without first discussing it with others to see if there was any rationality behind it. The crazy lady agreed to it, but her word is worth less than nothing, she is constitutionally incapable of telling the truth, as we will soon see.
If we were dealing with a person with a shred of sanity, this tale would end here and all would live happily ever after, unfortunately her madness was burning too bright for that, this was simply another beginning, as we will see in our next post.
